Big Island Tour Plane Found; No Survivors

Crews have recovered the bodies of three people from the wreckage of a Big Island tour plane. A pilot contracted by the Hawaii County Fire Department spotted the crash site Sunday morning after 6 days of searching.

The Cessna 172 was discovered just before 6 a.m. Sunday about 8 miles west of Pahala in the Kau Forest Reserve at an elevation of about 5,200 feet. Fire officials said the plane broke into several pieces.

An investigator from the National Transportation Safety Board examined the aircraft and will attempt to figure out what caused the Island Hoppers tour flight to crash.

This was to be the last day of the exhausting search, which began Tuesday afternoon when the flight did not return to the Kona airport as scheduled after a clock-wise tour around the island.

Flight instructor Katsuhiro Takahashi and two passengers from Japan were on board. Their families have since arrived in Hawaii.
