Indonesia confirms radioactive Cs-137 in shrimp linked to steel plant
“During the same briefing, Senior Advisor to the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs, Bara Khrishna Hasibuan, revealed initial investigations traced the source of contamination to PT Peter Metal Technology (PMT), a steel manufacturer in the Cikande industrial zone. The facility uses scrap metal as its primary raw material, and the contamination is believed to have spread through airborne transmission.”

A deadly E. coli outbreak hit 15 states, but the FDA chose not to publicize it
“Based on epidemiologic and traceback data, romaine lettuce was confirmed as the source of this outbreak,” according to the report, which noted the contaminated produce came from “a sole processor” that had obtained the lettuce from a grower. But the FDA redacted the name of the companies that processed and grew the lettuce before it released the report in response to a public records request filed by the Georges’ attorney, Bill Marler.”

Red dye No. 3: FDA bans ingredient from food | CNN
“The US Food and Drug Administration has banned the use of red dye No. 3 in food, beverages and ingested drugs, more than 30 years after scientists discovered links to cancer in animals, the agency announced Wednesday. Manufacturers using red No. 3 in food and ingested drugs have until January 15, 2027, and January 18, 2028, respectively, to reformulate their products, according to the FDA.”

“To help consumers identify foods that are particularly useful in building healthy dietary patterns, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has updated the definition of the ‘healthy’ nutrient content claim, which includes criteria a food must meet to use the ‘healthy’ claim on the package. The FDA also is exploring the development of a symbol to represent the claim ‘healthy’ to make it easier to spot foods that can be the foundation of healthy eating patterns.”

Onion Recall Linked to E. Coli and McDonald’s Spreads to Other Fast Food Chains
A deadly outbreak spurred removal of onions by a major food supplier in the Mountain West. Taco Bell, KFC, Burger King and Pizza Hut have stopped serving onions at various locations.
“A sweeping onion recall linked to an E. coli outbreak involving McDonald’s Quarter Pounders has prompted several other major fast-food chains to remove raw onions from their menu offerings. Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC and Burger King have stopped adding fresh onions to their signature items at certain locations. A spokeswoman for Yum Brands, which owns several fast-food chains, said that its restaurants were yanking onions from their menus ‘out of an abundance of caution.’ Yum Brands would not elaborate or say how many sites in how many states would not offer onions.”
