The general creed of Buddhism is based on the \u201cfour noble truths\u201d and the \u201ceightfold path.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The truths are:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Life\u2019s a bitch.\n<\/li>\n<li> The reason life\u2019s a bitch is that people are attached to material things.\n<\/li>\n<li> Life doesn\u2019t always have to be a bitch. You can achieve nirvana.\n<\/li>\n<li> The way to achieve nirvana is by following the eightfold path.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Naturally, when you hear about these truths, you\u2019re going to be curious about the eightfold path, which consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li> Right views, i.e., smarten up.\n<\/li>\n<li> Right intentions. Once you\u2019re smart, try to do the right thing.\n<\/li>\n<li> Right speech. Say the right thing.\n<\/li>\n<li> Right action. Knowing and saying the right thing isn\u2019t good enough, you have to actually <i>do<\/i> the right thing.\n<\/li>\n<li> Right livelihood. Make your living in an honorable way, i.e., don\u2019t work for Halliburton.\n<\/li>\n<li> Right effort. All of the above doesn\u2019t just happen on its own. You have to work at it.\n<\/li>\n<li> Right mindfulness. Once you\u2019ve beaten your physical self into<br \/>\nsubmission, you have to start working on your mental state, seeking the<br \/>\nability to think clearly and see things as they really are.\n<\/li>\n<li> Right concentration. Focus, focus, focus! The path is only<br \/>\ncomplete when you have refined your mind into a state of total focus on<br \/>\nreality, which is generally thought to be accomplished by the process of<br \/>\n meditation.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Following the eightfold path is key to Buddhism\u2019s system of spiritual<br \/>\nadvancement, in which doing the right thing (as outlined above) earns<br \/>\nyou karma, metaphysical bonus points which can be exchanged for only one<br \/>\n fabulous prize, Nirvana. In order to make the trade, however, you have<br \/>\nto accumulate an unspecified number of karma points, a process which<br \/>\nusually takes several lifetimes. (Your karma points roll over when<br \/>\nyou\u2019re reincarnated.) Alternatively, you can lose karma points by<br \/>\nengaging in wrong views, wrong intentions, wrong speech, wrong actions,<br \/>\nand so on. <\/p>\n<p>The Buddhist concept of karma comes from Hinduism, and some Buddhists<br \/>\nrevere Hindu deities.
