Zen teachers train their young pupils to express themselves. Two Zen temples each had a child prot\u00e9g\u00e9. One child, going to obtain vegetables each morning, would meet the other on the way.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d asked the one.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am going wherever my feet go,\u201d the other responded.<\/p>\n
This reply puzzled the first child who went to his teacher for help. \u201cTomorrow morning,\u201d the teacher told him, \u201cwhen you meet that little fellow, ask him the same question. He will give you the same answer, and then you ask him: \u2018Suppose you have no feet, then where are you going?\u2019 That will fix him.\u201d<\/p>\n
The children met again the following morning.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhere are you going?\u201d asked the first child.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am going wherever the wind blows,\u201d answered the other.<\/p>\n
This again nonplussed the youngster, who took his defeat to his teacher.<\/p>\n
\u201cAsk him where he is going if there is no wind,\u201d suggested the teacher.<\/p>\n
The next day the children met a third time.<\/p>\n
