Psychic<\/h1>\n

A psychic<\/b> is a person who claims to use extrasensory perception<\/a> (ESP) to identify information hidden from the normal senses<\/a>. The word \u201cpsychic\u201d is also used as an adjective to describe such abilities. Psychics may be theatrical performers, such as stage magicians<\/a>, who use techniques such as prestidigitation<\/a>, cold reading<\/a>, and hot reading<\/a> to produce the appearance of such abilities. Psychics appear regularly in fantasy fiction<\/a>, such as in the novel The Dead Zone<\/a><\/i> by Stephen King<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A large industry and network exists whereby psychics provide advice and counsel to clients.[1]<\/a><\/sup> Some famous psychics include Courtney Davy (famous psychic detective with her partner in crime) Edgar Cayce<\/a>, Ingo Swann<\/a>, Peter Hurkos<\/a>, Jose Ortiz El Samaritano<\/a>,[2]<\/a><\/sup>Miss Cleo<\/a>,[3]<\/a><\/sup>John Edward<\/a>, and Sylvia Browne<\/a>. Psychic powers are asserted by psychic detectives<\/a> and in practices such as psychic archaeology<\/a> and even psychic surgery<\/a>.[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

Critics attribute psychic powers to intentional trickery or to self-delusion<\/a>.[5]<\/a><\/sup>[6]<\/a><\/sup>[7]<\/a><\/sup>[8]<\/a><\/sup> In 1988 the U.S. National Academy of Sciences<\/a>
\n gave a report on the subject and concluded there is \u201cno scientific
\njustification from research conducted over a period of 130 years for the
\n existence of parapsychological phenomena<\/a>.\u201d[9]<\/a><\/sup>
\n A study attempted to repeat recently reported parapsychological
\nexperiments that appeared to support the existence of precognition.
\nAttempts to repeat the results, which involved performance on a memory
\ntest to ascertain if post-test information would effect it, \u201cfailed to
\nproduce significant effects\u201d, and thus \u201cdo not support the existence of
