{"id":4382,"date":"2016-08-26T12:30:00","date_gmt":"2016-08-26T12:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.donotdestroy.com\/index\/149496814392-2\/"},"modified":"2026-02-01T07:21:09","modified_gmt":"2026-02-01T00:21:09","slug":"149496814392-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.donotdestroy.com\/index\/149496814392-2\/","title":{"rendered":"149496814392"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/index\/wp-content\/uploads\/tumblr\/media\/149496814392.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"caption\">\n<p>Olympia, 1863 by Edouard Manet<\/p>\n<p>Though Manet\u2019s <i><a title=\"Le d\u00e9jeuner sur l'herbe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Le_d%C3%A9jeuner_sur_l%27herbe\">The Luncheon on the Grass (Le d\u00e9jeuner sur l&#8217;herbe)<\/a><\/i> sparked controversy in 1863, his <i>Olympia<\/i> stirred an even bigger uproar when it was first exhibited at the 1865 <a title=\"Paris Salon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paris_Salon\">Paris Salon<\/a>. Conservatives condemned the work as \u201cimmoral\u201d and \u201cvulgar.\u201d<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olympia_(Manet)#cite_note-Smarth-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup> Journalist <a title=\"Antonin Proust\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Antonin_Proust\">Antonin Proust<\/a> later recalled, \u201cIf the canvas of the Olympia was not destroyed, it is only because of the precautions that were taken by the administration.\u201d The critics and the public condemned the work alike. Even <a title=\"\u00c9mile Zola\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89mile_Zola\">\u00c9mile Zola<\/a> was reduced to disingenuously commenting on the work\u2019s formal qualities rather than acknowledging the subject matter, \u201cYou wanted a nude, and you chose Olympia, the first that came along\u201d.<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olympia_(Manet)#cite_note-HF-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup> He paid tribute to Manet\u2019s honesty, however, \u201cWhen our artists give us Venuses, they correct nature, they lie. \u00c9douard Manet asked himself why lie, why not tell the truth; he introduced us to Olympia, this <i>fille<\/i> of our time, whom you meet on the sidewalks.\u201d<sup><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olympia_(Manet)#cite_note-Frits-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Olympia, 1863 by Edouard Manet Though Manet\u2019s The Luncheon on &hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[12749],"tags":[582,523,60,1295,116,1941,6388,3862,3371,1907,117,92,1775,3,5151,6389],"class_list":["post-4382","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-tumblr","tag-art","tag-cat","tag-chick-of-the-day","tag-drawing","tag-edouard-manet","tag-figurative","tag-go-topless-day","tag-impressionism","tag-impressionists","tag-nude","tag-olympia","tag-painting","tag-portrait","tag-quote-of-the-day","tag-realisim","tag-realist"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.6 -
