\u201cIn
\n social media\u2019s early heyday\u2014the time of Occupy and the Arab Spring\u2014big
\ntech was heralded in the mainstream as a democratizing force, but it\u2019s
\nbecome clear that these commercial platforms aren\u2019t serving the public
\ngood. In fact, these platforms consolidate the worst extremes of
\nneoliberal ideology. While users are turned into products, the ruling
\nclass becomes increasingly powerful and unaccountable to the people.<\/p>\n

Digital
\n infrastructure offers no true space for dissent when it is privately
\nowned. Online activism only serves to direct atomized attention to
\nadvertisers. This process mirrors the shift of public wealth to private
\nhands, whereby what were once shared resources (e.g. libraries) become
\ndata-optimized, privatized operations. Work and life are merged entirely
\n and solidarity disappears behind corporate smokescreens. Underneath the
\n technophilic rhetoric of progress lies a race for information,
\nfinancial, and labor control that ensures growth is the domain of only
\nthe rich and the few.\u201d<\/p>\n
